Member of the Month - January - Malachi Cull

Malachi Cull

Tyler
There is more that meets the surface with Malachi. He is a deep dude. Very creative and not afraid to speak his mind. It is a shame his career at AI was cut short. However, I am sure this will not stop him from being in the film industry. When I first met him I knew that he is a driven intelligent guy. Looking forward to seeing what he does next.

Robert
Malachi is a bright guy with a level of determination matched by few other students I've met. I wish him the best and hope to keep working with him in the future.

Matt
I'm gonna miss Malachi, He did good work here at Ai, but I have no doubt that he will continue his work and do it well, even without the resources the school provides. However he is still a member of Rough Cut. He has the drive to do what he loves and be good at it. I wish you luck man.

Filmmaker Spotlight - Tyler Holland

Filmmaker Spotlight
January
Tyler Holland

Matt
I've enjoyed my run as Rough Cut President and I'm proud to pass the reins onto a filmmaker with such dedication and passion for creating and promoting work. As Tyler as the new President I wanted to share some of Tyler's Inspirations and passions and give insight to the Rough Cut members, new and existing about their new President.

Why film?

Tyler
Because the Boston Red Sox haven’t called me to be their 2nd baseman. I thoroughly enjoy making films. From holding the boom pole, filming, editing and most recently being on camera. It is all a lot of fun. Basically Film is the only thing I am good at.

What are some of your inspirations and influences?

Tyler
I am influenced by a lot of different things:
Believe it or not the show Jackass was a big influence on me. When that show came out it motivated my friends and I to make our own Jackass style videos. The skating and BMX is a huge influence as well. I got a camera and that is pretty much what started why I am in film school today.

Tyler
Music is a huge influence on me. It is the soundtrack to our lives. Watching Music Videos when I was younger Spike Jonze’s name kept coming up on many of my favorite videos. My favorite bands Thrice and A Wilhelm Scream are huge inspirations.

Tyler
As far as an influence on my work: The Chappelle’s Show and Arrested Development are influences, with a little bit of Andy Samberg’s SNL Digital Shorts and Kenny Powers of Eastbound and Down.

With such an interesting spectrum of influences I asked him about some of his favorite films.

My favorite film of all time is hands down The Big Lebowski
Fargo
The Dark Knight
Fight Club

Favorite directors?
Coen Brothers: They can do no wrong.

The Farrelly Brothers: “Kingpin” “There’s Something About Mary” Me, Myself, and Irene”

Christopher Nolan: “Dark Knight” “Memento” “The Prestige”

Stanley Kubrick: Has to be on here. He made powerful films.

I was then curious about his overall goal as a filmmaker.

One of my favorite things to do is to make people laugh. I want to continue to make humorous videos. I want to make people feel how I feel when I watch one of my favorite comedies.

Plans for the future?

Some filmmakers are pre-production people others are post. I really enjoy the production side of it. I am keeping an open mind. Being a Director of photography sounds awesome. I am a huge baseball fan, if I got a job filming for that or ESPN I would be set.

Who are some of the people you want to thank that have helped you get to where you are now?

I’ll try to keep this brief but I do have a lot of people to thank. In no particular order...My folks for creating me. My family for supporting me. The Morris family for the love and support. My girlfriend Cassandra for putting up with me and her support. Chris ‘Loot’ Leutbecher, Rob Ward, Robert Pearson, Chris Yocom, Chris Amatruda, Josh Morales, Matt Benedict, Matt Jimenez, Richard Inman, Greg LeSar, Justin Padilla, Kristina Mitchell. Belleview High School Class of 2004. The Rough Cut Community and The Art Institute of Tampa. You have all had an impact on me in some shape or form. I am forever grateful. Thanks!
